Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Can landlord restrict copies of keys

Can landlord install a restricted lock and key on public doors?

(Restricted key is stamped ''do not duplicate''.)

If yes, how many keys must landlord provide to tenants?

Re: Can landlord restrict copies of keys

Usually tenants like a 'restricted access' door. It improves security. Technically, it is a building improvement. The landlord must provide a key for every known occupant of an apartment. In real life, these keys are easy to have duplicated. You are welcome to a consultation at my offices for no fee at 42 West 44th Street, NY,NY. Please call for an appointment first. (646) 591-5786

Re: Can landlord restrict copies of keys

Yes, the landlord can restrict who has access to the building. I am not familiar with any case law which requires a minimmum number of keys other than the requirement to provide a key to every tenant named on the lease.
