Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
landlord & tenant
I'm a tenant. I rented a room to woman as a favor to someone for appx. 3-6 weeks. After 1 month she did not leave nor pay any more money. She set out to set me up. She called the police & said I stole her keys off the table. I did not take her keys. They asked me to give her another set & I agreed. The next morning I left for work leaving her in the apt. as usual because it turned out she did not have a job. When I came home my door was unlocked because she had drilled a hole in my bottom lock and had removed my top lock. I called the police to inform them that she had vandalized the property in addition to reminding them about the previous night's events. I filed a complaint. During these events I followed thru on processing the 30 day notice, etc. When she realized that her plan wasn't working she came up with another plan. A few weeks later, with the same drilled-out lock on the door she jammed the door from the outside and took the stem part of the doorknob off with me in the apt. She called the police again. While the P.O was trying to open the door she said she was staying the night at her sister's. I called the PO's and informed them that nite that she had somehow locked me in. She's counterclaiming lockout damage

You have a problem tenant who knows how to work the system. You should consult with a landlord/tenant attorney in your area as soon as possible to avoid more problems. Such is the life of a landlord.
