Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

leaving apartment

I signt a lease for a year, I live six months already but now I lost a job and I need to move out of state to go back to live with my family because I don't have money to pay the rent . But the landlord don't let me move and they charge me a lot of money, I want to know can I leave without any problem?is that hurt my credit score?

No one can force you to live in an apartment. However, the landlord also has the right to the rent. The law balances these two objectives by directing the landlord to mitigate damages should you vacate the apartment. Meaning, when you leave the landlord must try to re-lease the apartment. You would be responsible for reasonable expenses to re-lease the apartment. You would be responsible for rent prior to the apartment being re-rented.
