Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I live in Upstate New York and rent a house for a year. Recently my lease expired. I asked my landlord if I can stay in the house paying the same rent on moths to month basis and he agreed in writing. However now he requests me to pay the bills for sewer and tap water, which he previously paid himself. This effectively increases my rent by about a $100. I was under impression that it is a landlord responsibility to pay for sewer and tap water. Please advise what to do.

When your lease expired and the landlord accepted it, you became a month to month tenant. The landlord can end this deal by giving you a full month's notice. So if he gave you notice today, he could end your lease effective August 31, 2014. Since he can end the lease, he can also change the terms on which you can stay. You have to make the business decision whether to stay or go. Make sure you know how much water & sewer charges are due before you accept this.
