Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
I moved into an apartment in NY on 7/1/2010. Now the landlord says hes raising the rent $100. I asked him why and he said because his taxes are going up but none of my neighbors taxes are going up. Also he told me this rent increase would happen in April and now he says hes raising it for March. Is he allowed to do this? We dont have a lease its just month to month. But the rent has been $500 since I moved in. What are my rights?

If the agreement is for a month to month tenancy, upon 30 days notice the landlord may raise the rent - or have you evicted. You have the right, upon 30 days notice - to leave the apartment.
