Problem with Landlord

We have rented this house since 2001. In late 2006 the landlord came to us and claimed we owed money going back to 2001, having never mentioned this during all this time in between. What are our rights?

your lease should specifiy the terms as far as the fees, and you should maintain all receipts as proof of payment.
