Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I just recived a letter on the mail from my landlord staying I owe them back rent for the months of march thru may totaling 5,000...my son was supposed to give them a letter stating he isn't working in which he he did but it was late now they are saying I owe them this or they are going to evict me I'm on public assistance and I'm bi-polar I'm currently not working either...I want to know where do I go from here I don't wanna lose my apartment
