Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

rights to residency

I was told that if an individual resides at a home for a minimum of 30 consecutive days, without their name being on lease or deed, a person cannot change the locks and force the individual out of the home, without court intervention. Supposedly, they become automatic tenants of the home. Is that statement true?
