Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Roommate no longer paying their share

What do you do when you rent an apartment with someone, sign the lease

together, and they stop paying thier half? It has been 2 months since they

last paid.

There are 2 months left on the lease. When asked to leave due to non

payment, they said they would not leave. The utilities are also in the paying

roomates name with the understanding that they would be split each month.,

These have also gone unpaid. What options are available?

Re: Roommate no longer paying their share

You are still responsible for the rent, and will be evicted if its not paid in full. You have the right to sue your roommate for his failure to contribute.

Should you like to discuss this or any other legal matter, you can e-mail me for more information about low cost face-to-face, on-line, or a telephone consultation with a lawyer in our office.
