If you give your landlord his keys to his property have you abandon the apartment; or is that let him know that you no long wish to live in his property?

Re: Security Depoist
Giving the keys to the landlord is not by itself an abanadonment, but can be evidence of it depending on the intent of the parties. There can be many reasons that the keys are handed to the landlord.

Re: Security Depoist
There are many other interpretations for giving the landlord the keys. Alerting the landlord to a needed repair, then giving him the keys and instructions to return them after the repair is done is an example of neither.
The factor most important: what did you say to the landlord? For how long are you paid up?
In general, it "sounds" like a surrender. You are unlikely to go wrong with that conclusion.
