SEPERATE APARTMENTS the same bills

i have lived in this apartment for almost two years my son lived upstairs we paid seperate rents but shared the bills

because everything is on one system like it is just a one family house

he left six months ago and the apartment was empty now the landlords are renting it to some people and the bills are all mine my electric my heat my hot water they didn't even inform me

do i have the right to shut the braker off to the upstairs apartment or refuse to pay my rent until they give each apartment their own system?

Thgis ust be very stressful to you. The landlord, understandably, does not want to acquire more expenses but you do not want to subsidize your neighbor!

I recommend putting your entire rent in a separate bank account and pay the energy bill from that money. Put the money in that account: that is very imporatnt.

Then communicate with your landlord. There is no need to make enemies with your neighbor - its not entirely his fault.

You may also make a complaint to the proper city of new york agency.

May be landlord's bill

In NY, if any part of the utility bill is the landlord's then the landlord must pay the whole bill. For example if any of the utility bills cover a shared area, heat a shared area or light an area that other people can use, it is the landlord's responsibility.
