Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I signed a lease for a loft and paid half of the deposit $2,600), not the first month's rent yet. After 9 days I canceled. In the lease it says that the lease shall be effective 10 days after signing it.

The landlord said the whole amount would be credited, then half of it, then said I wouldn't get paid back anything. I went to small claims court and the landlord counter sued for damages out of breach of contract.
