Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
I signed a year lease and paid a security deposit and first months rent on an apartment in Brooklyn, NY. I found out that there is no certificate of occupancy for the building. Furthermore, though there is construction going on, there is a stop work order for the building. Is the lease even legal? Am I legally entitled to my money back?

If there is no certificate of occupancy for the building, the lease is not legal. As long as you did not move in you would be entitled to the return of your money.
