Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
Getting sued by landlord.
My boyfriend & I were served papers to 'recover monies arising of nonpayment of rent'. First thing we live out of state now in RI. We were in Jamaica,NY. The lease entailed all utilities included. Two days after i brought my new born baby home the electricity was off and there was a notice to shut off gas on the door. We left the apt that day because my daughter was on a respitory monitor. Other tennants in the building called to let us know they put the electricity on in they're name but we WOULD have to pay to use it. So we DID NOT go back. There for breaking the lease. What can we do to win this case?? We cant even afford right now to spend the money to get there from the move we just had. Also plz e-mail me if you a lawyer if u can help pro bono.
Thanx so much
