Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Tenant agreement - not on lease

Hi there,

I live on Roosevelt Island, managed by Manhattanpark. I live in an apt with a roommate. I am not on the lease. The management company says that I am not allowed to leave until the lease is up on July 1, but I am not currently on the lease. My roommate is resigning the lease, but I am moving out. I want to move June 1 - since I am not on the lease and my roommate has agreed to pick up the rent for June, can I be forced to stay in the apt?

Re: Tenant agreement - not on lease

If your name is not on the lease, then you have no obligation to the landlord. You can move out any time, as long as it is ok with your roommate as you may have an obligation to him/her. Just double-check to make sure that your name is not on the lease.
