Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

Tenant Dispute

I had a tenant who was not paying rent. We wrote letters asking her to leave and eventually filed a Notice of Ejectment. When we went to court, they granted her an extension to stay longer than we wanted. After she left, she sued us for breach of contract and loss of property, $3,000. We countersued for the same amount. We went to court and she was awarded $1,000, but nothing was awarded to us for nonpayment of rent, damaged property for which we had pictures, receipts and estimates. The reason was because we put a chain on the gate afterwards. I don't understand how we weren't awarded anything. I am planning to appeal, is there anything that I can do differently?

Re: Tenant Dispute

This must be very frustrating for you. You are very much in the 'right', yet the court did not understand the situation.

If you look up my other 'lawguru' responses, you will see I give concrete information and advice. In this case, I would want to meet with you. There must be something in the details that you presented badly to the judge to have this decision imposed on you.
