Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
I am a tenant of a house where my family lived for years. There is no written lease anymore and we did not bother about it. Instead my landlord assured me orally "you are the best tenant I ever had and you can live here as long as you want." However due to her recent divorce she wants us to move out. What is my right as tenant under these circumstances?

You have the right to receive a thirty day notice to terminate the lease. The landlord must commence a court action to evict you from the house. There is no "self help" eviction. If you are having problems finding a new place to rent, you may ask the court for additional time.

Mike is right, you must receive a thirty day notice to terminate the lease before you can be evicted, but unfortunately that is all that they are obliged to you. New York State law is very specific as to the exact wording required in these Notices and the manner in which they must be served upon the tenant.
