Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York

I have a tenant whose lease is not up until the 31st of March. They up and moved out in the middle of the night at the end of February and haven't paid rent for the month of March. I have not received a letter of intent to move out or the keys. As a landord, do I now have the right to go into the apatment and take possession of it?

Normally, the delivery of keys indicates abandonment of the apartment. However, I would look into the apartment to see if it is empty. I would also wait until April 1 (it is only a couple of weeks). On April 1, I would think that you have the right to go into the apartment and change the locks.
