Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
Tenants rights
I providedinformation regarding my doctors order to have a pet to my the rental agent. The agent called on my cell phone number, which is on file in the office. The agented stated that the tenants upstairs do not like dogs and she would not allow me to have a dog.I would have to move, and be responsible for the balance of the contract terms. The rental agent claimed that because my name does not appear on the lease( I live with my boyfriend) that he was in violation of the contract. I have openly lived at the complex since 5/15.I obtained a copy of tenants rights guide, and copied sect 235-f. within 2 hrs of the call I arrived at the complex to pay the rent with a my personal check.I handed a copy sec 235-f to the agent. She then stated that she could not accept the check because it was mine, not the tenants. (I paid the security deposit, and the first two months rent from the same account without issue.) And that she had already sent eviction papers.I purchased a money order, returned to the office, and she accepted the money order.I think I am being discriminated against, and she is retaliating because I have looked for legal council.
Can you provide further advice?
Thank you

Re: Tenants rights
I am a dog lover myself. I have a chinese pug dog. My wife wants to get a cardigan welsh corgi.
In New York City, the city council passed a law giving dog owners strong rights. However, I am not knowledgable about other parts of the state.
If you need the dog for health reasons, contact the NY State Division of Human Rights. they are a government agency that can help you. if they do not help you, contact me again and I will see what I can do. You are welcome to a consultation for no fee. (646) 591-5786.
