Legal Question in Landlord & Tenant Law in New York
Trespassing?
There was a party on the roof of a building. A bottle fell from the roof and just so happened to land by an officer. Therefore, the officer called in a phalynx of men to break up the party. There was some violent action and the party dispersed. Then I showed up with some friends. We were told of the actions and then decided to have a take a stroll to the roof. Stupid... the cops came back and proceeded to give us summons for trespassing. We were invited to the building and let in. What do we do? Go to the date and plead not guilty or guilty and just take a fine to avoid multiple court dates? Thanks for your help

Re: Trespassing?
Winning the complaint may be very easy if you choose to contest it. However, you are correct in understanding that there may be more than one court appearence required. My recommendation is to check if the ticket permits a night court appearence. In addition, often it will be resolved in one appearence if you handle as much of the preliminary pleading as possible by mail.
