Legal Question in Legal Ethics in New York
defamation of character
I am wondering if I have any legal recourse...my current employer has just made me aware of slanderous untrue statements made to her and others about me by my former employer.
I have prroof that they are completely false statements. This could have cost me my current job, as well as any future positions within the industry.
I am currently working in NYC, in event planning, it's a small industry and the woman making false statements is well known, so what she is saying is potentially harmful to my career. What action can I take to make her stop with the false statements she has made?

Re: defamation of character
If you can prove the statements are factually incorrect and or malicious and you can calculate damages, then you have a good case and should sue. Getting her to promise not do say these things won't help you as much as winning a lawsuit against her.
Re: defamation of character
If everything you said is correct, I think you have a good case for defamation. You should see a lawyer immediately. It is difficult to properly plead Slander in a lawsuit. You should have a professional do that and for him to seek a preliminary order to stop her from even speaking about you to anyone else.
