Attorney overcharged for slow & inefficient service - Anything I can do?
My dad died in Janary 2002... We started the relatively simple (one recipient, no contestants) will process shortly thererafter with ''Attorney X''. It was an estate valued at approx $200,000 (including a co-op apartment)..
Here it is March 2003, and by no fault of me being slow with documents, it is still not finished. In fact ''Attorney X'' had to re-submit forms to the courts that he made mistakes on (again not due to me or any misleading info that I gave him). I also had not been a ''high maintennence client'' in trying to rush him to get stuff done..
Yesterday I rec'd a bill for $17,355 (non-itemized) due to him (plus separate bills for other entities).. I was floored by the amount... I really dont think that amount is valid.. My question is ''what can i do - if anything?''
I have just submitted a request for him to itemize the amount.. I feel like I am being overcharged for slow and inefficient service which isnt even finished yet..

The amount seems high given the size of the estate and the absence of issues in dispute.
If this is the first bill you received, that raises other questions.
After you receive the itemized bill, suggest you have same reviewed by an experienced attorney.
I practice in NYC and Long Island.

You have the right to receive a detailed bill and to receive efficient, prompt service. Did you sign a retainer agreement setting forth the terms of the engagement and hourly rates and other fees that you would be charged? I would be happy to speak with you if you have any questions.
