Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

Dog Attacked

My dog(a Greyhound) was severly bitten by a neighbor's dog ( a French Mastiff). The neighbor's dog was not in her control at the time of the incident. The Vet has done a surgery to try to fix the massive wound, but after three weeks the injury does not seems to be repairing itself. The financial cost to me has been very great to this point and now I will most likely have to put my dog down. I filed a report with the animal warden in tha area that I live. I live in New York State. What legal rights do I have?

Re: Dog Attacked

Unfortunately, a dog is considered personal property and although you should be able to successfully sue the owner, the most you can recover is the cost of the veterinary treatment and, if the animal dies, the dog's value.
