Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

My father got hurt at work in 2008, and now the insurance company settled at 170.000 but his lawyer wants him to sign the paper's without telling him how much he's chargeing or what he worked on but everybody say that lawyer's charge a 3'rd of the winning's is that true?

The lawyer has to set forth in writing who much he is charging your father. Usually this is done at the beginning of the case in a written retainer agreement. The typical fee in a personal injury case is 1/3 of the net recovery after repayment of the lawyer's out of pocket disbursements. There are different rules for Workers' Compensation Insurance cases that I am not familiar with.
