Legal Question in Personal Injury in New York

liable/slander

Do lawyers avoid cases of slander? Are they difficult to win?

I borrowed $16000 from a friend, and have been paying her back (for 5 years so far!) each month as I wrote I would. For the last few years, she has been telling people I borrowed $17000 and will not pay her back. I have seen a drop in my work (she and I are freelance musicians) and only recently have heard from some colleagues that she said this about me. Is there any way to stop her? Also, she is getting 8% interest on this loan. Are there any legalities I could use as leverage to get her to stop the lies? Thank you for your help.

Re: liable/slander

Libel and slander can be very difficult to prove. Generally, you need to contact an attorney who regularly handles this type of case.

If you have a written loan agreement, you can sue her based on that agreement. You can force her to give an accounting of your payments, and include a request that the judge tell her not to continue spreading lies about your payment history.
