what is the personal liability for a motor vehicle accident if your auto insurance does not provide enough coverage?

As the driver you would be responsible for the damages to the other person if you are at fault. Your insurance will only cover you up to the amount of coverage that you bought. So it is possible that you could be responsible for the damages over and above the coverage. What usually happens is that unless you have signioficant assets, the claim settles within the amount of coverage and the case is over and you are no longer responsible.
