in a personal injury case does the client have to pay the attorney for money awarded for basic economic losses?

It would depend upon the retainer you signed. Often, the retainer provides that the attorney receives one-third of the sum recovered. That "sum" might include money for special damages, basic economic loss, pain and suffering, etc. Best, M. E. Zuller
