i am being sued and have joint ownership of my home. can we be forced to sell our home?

It depends on whether you have an insurance policy that provides coverage for the type of suit you are the defendant in (i.e. Homeowner's, auto, business).
If you are not covered by insurance, and you lose the suit, the victorious plaintiff may come after your personal assets to satisfy a judgement, including your bank accounts, vehicles and yes, your home.
