Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York
My boyfriend and his ex-girlfriend own a house together. They are both on the mortgage and the deed, he has left the house and continues to pay half the mortgage and taxes, she is paying the other half. The deal was that they would sell the house and split the profits. She has since changed all the locks and avoided all contact with him. He would like the house sold or her to buy him out, is the only way for this to happen to contact a lawyer and go to court?

The name of the legal proceeding is "an action for partition."

Alternatively, depending upon the amount of equity he has in the house, he might inform her that he will no longer pay toward the mortgage.
