Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Co-Habitation Help?

I have been living with someone for the past 10 years, before we got together I owned my own home but when we got together I mistakenly and under pressure from him put his name on my deed. He has now moved out, although he still has things here and when I am at work he comes in and out of my house, I would like to change the locks because I fear for my safety and I am scared things will turn up missing. Can I legally change the locks since he has changed his residence? Please help.

Re: Co-Habitation Help?

I strongly advise you to speak with an attorney about all of the facts and circumstances of your situation before doing anything. If you are the only one living in your house, you should ahve no problem changing the locks - BUT information which you may have not provided could indicate that changing the locks might constitute wrongful eviction and expose you to serious liability.
