What is a Departmental Search?

I am a Florida Resident purchasing a home in the Long Island New York area. One of the items listed on my estimated closing costs is a departmental seach. What exactly is a departmental search and how could it affect me.

A departmental search should refer of public records of payment of various bills and taxes affecting the real estate. Inquire of the closing agent or attorney for a full explanation of those charges.
