What determines legal pet ownership? If an unmarried couple both want equal ownership of a pet? What are the cheapest steps to take that's still legally binding?

Prepare a document listing the details of the agreement, list a nominal consideration, say $1, and have both parties sign it before a notary.

A pet is like any other property - a sofa, car, shirt, etc. How would you determine ownership of a sofa? Most lawyers would say produce a receipt demonstrating purchase and proof of payment. Same with a pet.
