eviction

i am in the process of about to be evicted. I was wondering how long I would have until the last day that I could stay at my current residency. I have not yet recieved an eviction letter, but my landlord said that if I do not pay this months rent by tommorow, that I would have 5 days to move out; how is that possible?

Your residential landlord cannot legally evict you in the State of New York until he has obtained a warrant of eviction. The 5 day period he mentioned is the time within which he will formally serve you with notice of his intention to evict you. He will then serve you with a Notice and Petition to formally begin an eviction proceeding. The important thing is not to panic or to default. Follow the instructions on the documents served upon you. Speak with the clerks at the court for procedural help.
