Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

So my father entered an agreement with a contractor to put a wing on our house for 50,000. The contractor was about half way done when he stopped because the materials cost was going up. My father said "if you go ahead and finish the job, ill pay a bonus of 5 grand". The contractor agreed and finished the job. Now my dad just wants to hand over 50,000. is this fair?

That is for the contractor to decide. Conceivably, he could file a mechanic's lien against the property or sue your father for the agreed upon balance.
