Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Finding a legitimate lawyer

My parents are senior citizens and are in the process of selling their home and purchasing a new one in another state. Their lawyer is not someone they know

1)How do we go about checking to be sure this lawyer

(or any lawyer) is legitimate and has no complaints against him.

Re: Finding a legitimate lawyer

I cannot speak for any state other than New York. However, in my opinion the very best way to inquire about a lawyer is to contact the local bar association. In New York, a grievance is usually submitted through that agency.

If you want to inquire about whether the lawyer is admitted to practice law, in New York there is a web site -- www.courts.state.ny.us/webdb/wdbcgi.exe/apps/INTERNETDB.attyreghome.show

You can conduct a search to determine if the attorney you are using is in good standing in the state.

Mike.
