Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

I am half owner of a property with a relative for 14 years in NY State. I never claimed the property on my taxes or received any benefits from the filing. If I am paying half of the bills for the property am I entitled to extra money when we sell the property. I have canceled checks to confirm all bills paid for this property. I want out of this mortgage and don't know how to handle this. I do not want to lose anything I may be entitled to.

You can, unless the relative is your spouse, can petition the court to partition the realty. The court will order the house sold and the proceeds equitably divided. You can also transfer or sell your interests to your relative. You can contact me at the email below if you need further assistance.

Sincerely,
