Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York
Hi,
I am trying to sublet a room in a house. I have found this potential resident who had told me that she would send me a check for the rent and the deposit. I received the check and realized that it has $2000 more than the required amount which had been sent by her financier. She sent me a message saying her financier made a mistake. They were supposed to send the extra $2000 to the director of a course that she is trying to register for at Syracuse university. I asked her to give me her account number for me to transfer the money. She is not ready to do that, instead she is asking me to do a money transfer to the director of the course. I have not talked to this girl even once. She uses a Google phone number. I don't even know if she is real. Every time I ask her to call me, she gives a very silly reason not to call. I have deposited the money to my account now. I am just not sure if I do a money transfer now, if it can be part of some kind of illegal scheme. The whole thing is very fishy. Please let me know if it is alright for me to do a money transfer.

You are probably being scammed. Don't send any money. Wait for the check to bounce.
Just because your bank lets you draw against the check does not mean it has been paid. Talk to a banker about what "final payment" means. I just had a trust check bounce, two weeks after being deposited. It's called the Nigerian Check Scsm.
