Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

House Ownership

My two sisters lived in the same house for 20 years. One sister originally owned the house with her husband who passed away more than 20 years ago. The other sister and her husband lived, paid rent and shared other household expenses for 20 years to the widowed sister. Seven years ago the widowed sister added the other sister on the deed as an owner of the house. That sisters husband has since passed away. The sister who originnaly owned the house has just died without a will. Can you explain ownership now? The sister who just died has 2 children and a four grandchildren, the sister on the deed and a brother remaining.

Re: House Ownership

It depends on how the two sisters took title to the house. If they were "joint tenants" then the remainng sister owns the house in full now (whether or not there was a will). If they were "tenants in common" then when the one sister died, her children "inherited" her half of the house. Must see the deed.
