Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York
My husband lost his bag yesterday which contains important ids, credit cards, cash ($40), cell phone, voided check with our address, keys to our house, some hardware and a $300 value new jacket.
Someone found it and called him today, asking for our home address so he can return the bag to us. When asked to meet in a public place, the guy simply hang up.
We went to the police and file a report but was told this is only a "lost" item. But I looked online, according to New York Personal Property - Article 7-B - 252, this guy must return the stuff to us. We now know his name and cell number, but the police refuse to track him down.
Your help would be highly appreciated.

You should change your homes' lock cylinders. Your home address can be accessed by using a reverse directory. Notify your credit card issuers and get replacement card with a new account number. Call the cell phone provider and disable the phone.
