Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Land Boundries

We live in the house my wife's parents owned. They died, the gouse remained empty for 6 months. When my wife's parents were alive, they mowed lawn belonging to land owned by our neighbors. Since we moved in th eneighbor has mowed the patch of lawn. We have lived there for 9 years. My wife's family mowed the patch for 40 years prior. My wife feels by ''imminant domain'', the land is ours. The deeds decree the land is theirs. Is there a grandfather clause or something for when land was once used by others?

Re: Land Boundries

Your spouse is tghinking of eminent domain...how the government takes. The legal concept in your case is called adverse possession. You can claim the land if you meet certain criteria...it is not 'automatically' yours.
