Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Former Landlord is holding personal property and will not return it
We rented from former landlord for a year and half on a two year lease. We had 2 dogs upon moving in and therefor paid her a extra 75.00 a month to have the dogs there. She claims that all the carpet is destroyed when in fact only one was and we offered to replace it but she said no, just clean it, that would be fine, so I did. (our dogs were NOT allowed upstairs) We had to break our lease do to a relocation to FL and found her new tenants. We left a few items behind that she will not return to us and we do need them. She will not speak with her lawyer, our lawyer or us. She did not return our deposit due to breaking the lease and now is claiming we owe her twice that amount. I unfortuantly never dreamed she would pull this or I would have taken pictures of the place. For all I know she tore up the carpet after I left and took photos. She refused to do a walk through with us on the day we left because it was New Years Day and she was too tired to get up early. What can we do from here?

Your only option is to sue in Small Claims Court in NY for the value of the items.
