Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Landlord Not Renewing Lease

My Lease ends on 7/1/09 and landlady has informed me that she is not renewing. She said that it was nothing I did but she is no longer renting the space. If I do not find an apartment by 7/1/09, what can I do? Is she required t give me extra time?

Re: Landlord Not Renewing Lease

If you cannot leave by July 1, you may request more time from the landlord. If you offer rent and she accepts, you become a holdover tenant. Eviction would mean the landlord would have to give you 30 day (a month) notice.

A landlord may not evict without a warrant issued by a court. And if the landlord does initiate an eviction proceeding, a court normally gives some time to the tenant to find another place to live.

That being said, you should begin looking for another apartment.

Mike.
