Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York
How To Make A Claim For A Abandoned Property.
A Single Family Property here in Brooklyn, NY. Was Owned since 1950's by a lady. She then transferred the property 100% to another lady who was younger than her in 1990. The lady that owned the house 100% died about 6 years ago. The little old lady who originally owned the house remained in the house and maintained the bills. But For the past 2 years I have not seen her at all all the mail is piling up and I checked the nyc database no taxes has been payed since 2005. The next door neighbor said that she is dead. So the house has been just siting there since. The lady who owns the house 100% I was a friend of hers and I know that sh did not have any spouse no kids she had one sibling a brother I called him and he is not interested no one even knows that she owned this house I spoke to the brother 2 kids and they are not interested nor do they want anything to do with this. Is there a way I can pay the taxes or apply to the state to get the house?

Re: How To Make A Claim For A Abandoned Property.
You should consult with an attorney to approach the brother again or deal with this another way. The estate/house needs to pass through probate or administration. If no family is available, the public administrator can be appointed to transfer title. Paying the taxes will not get you anywhere in terms of acquiring title to the property.
