Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Hello. When I met my wife, she owned a farm which she wasn't living on. After we got married, we filed a joint business license and my name went on the property title. Since that time, my wife was diagnosed with mental illness & because of her erratic behavior, I have had to move off the farm. I have invested both financially and physically in this business. I am wondering what my legal rights and/or responsibilities are to this business/property as well as what they would be should we divorce. I need specific case reference. Thanks.

This website is limited to giving brief answers. Equitable distribution is the law in New York for distribution of martial assets on the granting of a divorce. For example, a judge will decide on how martial assets are distributed after he evaluates what assets each spouse brings to the marriage, the contribution of improvements to assets of the marriage, the financial needs of each spouse in order to maintain a standard of living close or equal to the standard of living during the marriage, and the potential future earnings of each spouse. There is no exact formula but there is a balancing of the equities.
