Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

Putting a barrier against cars on my property

I live on a major state road and have had 7 accidents occur in my yardin the past 6 years. There is a slight bend to the road and if you are drunk or fall asleep, you end up in my front yard. I have 3 small kids and can't use our front yard for fear of death. Can i put boulders/rocks down the easeway (with the neighbor's permission) to prevent the cars from crossing into my yard without being held liable for a lawsuit if the driver is injured? I have contacted the ny dot and they are to send out an engineer to look at the situation for possible solutions. In the meantime, i was thinking of putting up boulders to stop the unaware drivers before they kill one of my family members.

As long as they are on your property, not in any right of way, and comply with any local ordinances on fences or the like, you should be able to do it. I suggest checking with your local building department to see if there are any prohabitions.
