Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York
real estate
My partner and I were moving out of
an apartment on June 20th we then
left for florida for a few days when we
returned to the apartment the locks
had been changed and what we left
behind was taken. We returned from
florida on June 27th and our lease
was up on the 30th The landlord has
stated he thought we moved out.
What steps do we need to take to get
our money back for the things taken.
They will no longer return my calls or
emails

Re: real estate
If the value of the property taken was less than $5,000, I would commence a small claims action against the landlord. You will have to prove the value of the property with paid receipts or an expert to determine the value of the property.
If the value of the property is over $5,000, you should contact an attorney for representation. Self-help evictions are illegal in New York.
