Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York

I recently have gotten a three day notice to pay rent and also a petition for non payment from the court delivered to my apartment in NYC. I haven't answered either one because my landlord said that they put the case on hold so that we can work something out outside of court (I'm making payments to him). When I went to the court though, they said that the case was not on hold. I have two voice mails saved on my phone of the landlord assuring me that the case was on hold and that he wouldn't take action against me. He told me to ignore the notices and just make payments to him. Can I trust this?
