Patron called this library to ask for the federal law on sharing a house. She was told that there was a federal law that says you are allowed to share your home. This patron lives in the Village of Bellport, Suffolk County, New York. She shared her house with someone who left without paying the rent and now wants his personal possessions back. He is suing for his possessions, she is countersuing for the rent. He says sharing the house was not legal, she says it is.

Sharing a house
Federal Laws, if any, would only apply to houses on Federal property.
Sharing or renting a house is contract law and therehas to be an agreement that in exchange for living in the house rent and/orexpenses will be paid.
Once it is shown that the other peron lived in the house, proof of rent, costs andliving expenses will have to be shown in order to recover.
This transmission is not legal advice, nor does it imply an attorney client relationship. It is always my opinion that consultation with an attorney after setting out all the facts is the only proper way to receive legal advice.
