Legal Question in Real Estate Law in New York
Small claims court
I just recieved a letter stating I am being sued by my neighbor for $2725 for damage to property. I have no idea what this is about. How can I defend myself? Am I able to see his claim to know what the problem is supposed to be? Please do not tell me to talk to him because that is not an option.

Normally there is an indorsed complaint setting forth the nature of the claim. If this is unclear, you may ask for clarification.
Re: Small claims court
Ultimately, the plaintiff will not only have to state the nature of the complaint, but (s)he also has the burden of proving the elements of the cause of action. On your first appearance, you should tell the judge that you need to know the details of the claim and request an adjournment to prepare your defense.
