Assume a childless married couple. The husband dies intestate, having owned assets in his own name. I understand that the widow and the husband's next of kin share in the inheritance. How can next of kin ensure that they receive their share?

Your assumption is incorrect. In the event of intestacy the entire estate passes to the surviving spouse
